As someone who has struggled with mental health for most of his life, Yechan wants to help those that experience mental illness through his music. He grew up in a community that dismissed mental illness to be “a phase” or “just a bad day” and discouraged to openly talk about such things. So, for many years he buried his own and developed a substance abuse problem along the way. Yechan struggled with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, addiction, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts. Thankfully, he was able to get sober with the help of friends and music. Yechan is now driven to express his feelings and stories that were once bottled away through the songs he makes. He is currently working on an album focused on his personal experience with mental health. In the meantime, he performs for organizations that address mental health and de-stigmatize the perceptions society has on mental illness.
